Meet Reveca Torres

       2

While on a family vacation in Mexico, Reveca fractured her spinal cord in an automobile accident and was paralyzed. She immediately knew something was wrong when she could not move. It was awhile before someone passed this rural area and was able to help the Torres family to the nearest medical facility. Once the family realized Reveca had injured her spine it was obvious her medical needs would be extensive and arrangements were made to have her transferred to the nearest medical center in Texas. After weeks in Intensive Care and surgery she was stable enough to return to Chicago. Having an incomplete injury and with no guarantee as to how her body would recover, she spent the next three months at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago relearning activities of daily life and adjusting to a wheelchair.
Since her injury she has worked hard to achieve all she has set her mind to. Reveca needs the support of friends, family and her community to reach her goals. Because Project Walk veers from traditional medicine, funding is not available through insurance and Reveca needs $4,000 a month for treatment.
In 2009, Reveca and the BACKBONES Team are working towards providing free One-on-One support for people with spinal cord injury and their families. We strive to build a peer network through telephone, in-person or web-based connections and encourage growth by the sharing of experiences and ideas. As a host to social events BACKBONES creates an inviting atmosphere where people can ask questions, learn from each other in an informal setting and make lasting friendships.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."

The first step in anything we do is of great importance.  The first yoga class for example is very difficult for people.  Not the class itself but more so just getting there.  Take action for what you want.  In physics the hardest thing to do is to gain momentum.  Same thing applies in life.  It is a single step that you will build your momentum from.  When you stop too long or get your mind too involved things become complicated.  It is important to simplify what we do and not to focus on the fourth step before the first one has even be taken.  Be Present, Be Mindful, Just Be!

We have events and new classes in January.

The mediation classes will be donation based classes, benefiting the Chicago Buddhist Vihara. Classes begin Saturday January 9th and will go through February 13th. Practice begins at 5:30pm at TriBalance.

· Sunday, January 17th 1:15-2:15pm   Tai Chi/ Qiqong class will begin.

The Taoist Internal Healing Arts, Qi Qong and Tai Chi Chun, are based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach to health.  The TCM approach to health is based on having all the bodies systems balanced.

The first step is building strength in the body, mind and spirit is through Qi Qong. Qi Qong is an ancient Chinese health care system the involves the movement of Qi  or energy as it circulates in the human body.  It combines movement with the coordination of the body mind and breath. Qi Qong is the foundation for all healing arts. Qi Qong can improve and restore mental, physical and spiritual health, reduce stress and increase longevity. Qi Qong would be learned first in an initial eight-week session. Once learned it takes 15 minutes to do. That would serve as a warm up and foundation for the more challenging Tai Chi Chuan. The remaining 45 minutes will focus on Tai Chi.  The ancient art of Tai Chi uses gentle flowing movements to reduce the stress of today's busy lifestyles and improve health.  Originally a martial art, as practiced today, Tai Chi is also often described as a "Meditation in motion" because it promotes serenity through gentle movements-connecting the body mind and spirit. Tai Chi promotes internal health, stress reduction, balance and agility.
